7 Technology Themed Books Your Students Will Love

Teaching kids all about digital citizenship, staying safe on the computer, and limiting tech use is important in any classroom! However, when you are teaching a computer or tech class, it’s a necessity. But how do you keep these topics interesting and engaging for your elementary students? With books! As much as I love teaching all things tech, I always look for any opportunity to bring in a great book. I love to read stories to my students that relate to what we are learning. I am so excited to share with 7 of my favorite technology themed books your students will love.

1. Click, Clack, Quackity-Quack

This super cute and funny book written by Doreen Cronin and Betsy Lewin is all about some silly cows on a farm who have learned how to type. And. . . Duck loves to show off what they are doing.

I love using this book with my youngest tech students because it also focuses on letters of the alphabet. My students love identifying the letters of the alphabet that begin each of the sentences throughout the book.

Click, Clack, Quackity-Quack is part of a great series all about Duck and his adventures on the farm. You can’t go wrong adding this fun book to your technology lesson plans.

2. Nerdy Birdy Tweets

Nerdy Birdy Tweets by Aaron Reynolds is a fantastic book to help introduce digital citizenship to your students.

It’s always surprising to me how many kids these days have access to social media.

Because it’s easy to misread and misuse tone when it comes to electronic communication, this book is a great conversation starter for digital citizenship activities.

Nerdy Birdy Tweets also focuses on the importance of real-life friendships and how important they are in our digital world.

I love using this book as a read-aloud before a digital citizenship unit. It was definitely a great addition to my technology themed books collection.

3. Goodnight iPad

Putting away electronics for the night can be a challenge for anyone, even adults!

Good Night iPad by Ann Droyd is a hilarious parody of the wildly popular children’s book Goodnight Moon.

I love that this book is able to spark a debate about how connected to technology we all are.

While I obviously love technology, it’s important for me to make sure my students understand how, and when, to use it responsibly.

This book is the perfect way to introduce this topic without sounding like “just another adult” telling them to put their technology away.

4. Coding to Kindness

Written by Kindergarten teacher Valerie Sousa, Coding to Kindness is a wonderful story about friends who need a little help remembering to be kind to one another.

I love that the characters, Grace, Dorothy, and Ada are all named after pioneer women in computer science.

It includes coding practice like downloadable, printable sequencing cards with directions like forward, backward, left, etc…

I like to code a lot in my classroom. So, using technology themed books like this as an introduction and whole class activity is a great way to introduce the concept while also focusing on the importance of kindness.

5. If You Give a Mouse an iPhone: A Cautionary Tail

Another amazingly relevant book by author Ann Droyd, If You Give a Mouse an iPhone, focuses on the importance of enjoying the world away from electronics.

This engaging book was a quick class favorite in my classroom. It’s often requested as a read-aloud or early finisher book kids love to read on their own.

My 1st and 2nd graders can really relate to the little mouse, Applesauce, in the story.

I’m always amazed at the depth of the class discussions we have after reading the book.

Believe it or not, kids can absolutely understand the importance of putting away technology to enjoy the world around them.

6. Grace Hopper: Queen of Computer Code

In addition to great fiction books, I also love books that introduce my students to real-life heroes of the technology world.

Grace Hopper: Queen of Computer Code tells the story of Grace Hopper who was a trailblazing woman in the field of computer science. She even coined the term “computer bug”.

I use this book as a read-aloud for my Kinder through 2nd grade students. It’s great to use before a STEM unit or as we celebrate Women’s History Month.

Written by Laurie Wallmark, Grace Hopper: Queen of Computer Code is an inspirational story of dedication and determination students can relate to! Not to mention, aspire to be like!

7. The Technology Tail: A Digital Footprint Story

The Technology Tail: A Digital Footprint Story by Julia Cook is a wonderful addition to her Communicate with Confidence book series for kids in first through sixth grade.

The story is perfect for digital citizenship awareness and helps students understand the importance of being kind and responsible when using social media.

It also focuses on the importance of being aware that what you put out in the digital world will follow you for a lifetime, creating a digital tail.

I love how The Technology Tail uses rhyme and colorful illustrations to grab and keep my student’s attention no matter their grade level.
