If you’ve been searching for an engaging and meaningful way to introduce STEM or STEAM to your students, I’ve got exactly what you need! Let’s take a look at my favorite way to introduce science, technology, engineering, and math in a way that’s both fun and interactive. This STEM lesson opens a door into the world of curiosity, problem-solving, and discovery.
Why You’ll Love This STEM Lesson
Alright friends, if you’re looking for a fun and interactive way to introduce the wide world of STEM, you’re in the right place! In my room, I use a STEM lesson that incorporates a picture book written by yours truly, along with a low-prep, printable booklet to put what we’re learning into practice. There are also digital components to this STEM lesson, as well as hands-on learning challenges that help bring it all together and make instruction a breeze. Trust me, you’re going to LOVE this one!
How the Book and Resource Work Together for STEM Lesson Magic
As I mentioned, there are two components to this STEM lesson: a picture book and a printable resource with digital options. Let’s first take a quick look at each one to see how they’ll be a game-changer in your classroom
First, the read-aloud. When you share Let’s Explore STEM picture book with your class, you’re giving your kids the chance to realize that STEM is all around them. Whether it’s building bridges, experimenting with technology, or wondering about space, the book makes these big concepts feel approachable and exciting. It’s a perfect read-aloud to kick off hands-on activities and get your learners thinking like young engineers and scientists.
The best part is that this book isn’t just for the classroom. Parents can use it at home to spark meaningful conversations and activities with their kids, too! It’s a resource that fosters exploration, strengthens literacy skills, and brings STEM to life in everyday moments.
Next, the booklet and digital materials guide your learners through each part of STEM with targeted prompts and visuals. From defining what a scientist or engineer does to thinking through how math and technology show up in everyday life, your kiddos begin to see themselves in these roles. There’s also space for them to brainstorm ideas, reflect on their own interests and talents, and even draft their own STEM challenges. By using this resource, you’re helping them not only absorb information but apply it in ways that feel meaningful and personal.
How to Structure this STEM Lesson: Step By Step
Wondering how to bring this STEM lesson to life? Let’s walk through what this looks like in my classroom.
Step One: Read Aloud the Let’s Explore STEM Picture Book
First, I read aloud the Let’s Explore STEM picture book to launch this STEM lesson. This book was designed to make introducing STEM concepts fun and easy. The picture book is packed with engaging rhymes and vibrant illustrations that help break down big ideas into kid-friendly language. Even complex topics such as engineering and math become approachable and relatable. This helps to give your kids the confidence to see themselves as STEM explorers. By the end of the story, you’ll notice them sitting a little taller, ready to take on the challenge of a hands-on STEM activity.
As you read aloud, you can pause to invite your kiddos into the conversation. Ask them what they think a scientist does or how they’ve seen technology in their own lives. These simple moments turn the read-aloud from a passive activity into an interactive experience. You will love how it encourages kids to think, share, and wonder.
Step Two: Use the Let’s Explore STEM Resource to Expand

After reading and discussing with your kids, it’s time to do some work expanding on what you read about. In my Let’s Explore Stem Resource, you get a variety of materials to help make this easier. Inside you’ll find:
- Digital Instructional slides
- Printable Activity Booklet
- Digital Activity Booklet for Google Slides
- Detailed Lesson Plan & Ideas for Use
In the next step of this lesson, I recommend utilizing the digital, instructional slides to walk through important concepts. Inside you will cover what STEM stands for, what a scientist does, the engineering design process, and more. I like to display these slides up on the smart board as we chat through these concepts.
STEM Lesson Printable & Digital Student Booklet
As you walk through these slides together, your students will use either the printable activity booklets or the digital version of the booklets to follow along and fill in their answers. This engaging companion resource gives your learners a chance to reflect, personalize, and connect STEM concepts directly to their world. There are also optional pages for STEAM, if you would like to include art in your lesson. Whether you print out copies or assign the digital version, this booklet makes a perfect follow-up activity to deepen your learners’ understanding and spark even more excitement.

The printable version is great because it’s quick and easy to prep and saves on paper in a half-size format. You can even print these double-sided if you’d like. Inside the resource, I have included detailed booklet preparation instructions as well as many different ideas to use the booklet in your classroom. You can have students work in teams, independently, or as a whole group.
The digital version of the booklet is designed for Google Slides and great option if you would like to have your students type out their answers instead. They can each work on recording their answers on a digital device. I’ve also included detailed instructions on how to attach assignments to Google Classroom, as well as how to save and send the files to make using the digital version as simple as possible. No matter what you choose, this STEM lesson will ensure your students gain a deeper understanding of these concepts in a fun way.
Step Three: STEM Follow-Up
Last, I recommend taking some time to reflect on what the students have learned about STEM. You can also discuss which parts of STEM students are most interested in learning more about. This is always a lot of fun as the teacher because it will allow you a bit of a peek into what your kids find most exciting!
If you want to bring this STEM lesson full circle, I recommend circling back to the picture book. Inside you can check out the vocabulary words, discussion questions, and three simple STEM challenges that use basic craft materials or recyclables. These ready-to-go activities make it easy to extend the lesson. They give your students the chance to experiment, create, and apply the engineering design process, all without hours of prep on your end. I know your students will LOVE the engaging building ideas in the book!
Why This STEM Lesson Matters for Our Learners

The Let’s Explore STEM read-aloud and resources aren’t just about teaching science and math terms. They help our kiddos develop critical life skills. As our learners listen to the read aloud and work through the booklet, they’re practicing how to think creatively, solve problems, and approach challenges with a growth mindset. These are the kinds of skills that set them up for success, not just in school, but in life.
The engaging rhymes and reflective activities also support early literacy. This helps our learners expand their vocabulary and strengthen their understanding of key concepts. It’s an experience that bridges literacy and STEM, showing our kiddos that reading and science can go hand in hand. Plus, the built-in discussion prompts help foster meaningful conversations, too.
The concepts in this book encourage our learners to explore, take risks, and learn from their mistakes. They’re invited to imagine and think like real engineers, scientists, and mathematicians. By the end of the lesson, your kiddos don’t just know what STEM stands for. They see themselves as part of it, ready to keep asking questions and discovering the world around them.
