7 Fun and Engaging February STEM Activities

Why February STEM Activities Are Worth It

February STEM activities bring so much value to the classroom. I love how they encourage my students to explore hands-on challenges while building important skills. These activities help to grow creativity as our students design, build, and problem-solve in fun and unique ways. It’s a chance for them to see how math, science, and engineering work together. I’m always amazed at the connections they make between these subjects.

February STEM encourages teamwork in the classroom.

Another great thing about February STEM activities is that they encourage teamwork. When our students collaborate to solve challenges, they learn from each other and practice communication and problem-solving in real time. It’s also a wonderful way to keep everyone engaged during a busy month. Whether we’re creating snowflakes or Valentine’s Day shapes, these activities tie into the natural rhythm of February and keep students excited about learning.

One of my favorite benefits of these activities is how they build confidence in the students. Watching my students experiment, try again, and succeed in their designs shows how much they can accomplish with creativity and determination. That is what makes February STEM activities a valuable part of your classroom!

February STEM Activities You Don’t Want to Miss

Now that we’ve explored why February STEM activities are an important addition to your classroom, let’s dive into the fun part: the challenges! I’ve mapped out seven engaging STEM challenges that are perfect for this time of year. Each focuses on a unique theme, making it easy to keep your students excited and learning all month.

1. Winter Tinker Tray

Kick-off February STEM with a Winter Tinker Tray that inspires creativity and independent thinking! This activity challenges our students to design a unique snowflake or snowman using a tray of assorted materials. By using the engineering design process, they can imagine, plan, and create their designs while applying math, art, and writing skills.

For a literacy tie-in, I pair this with the book Snow by Uri Shulevitz or another winter-themed story.

To set up your tinker tray, use a divided tray like a silverware organizer or party tray. Then, fill it with items like popsicle sticks, cotton balls, shredded paper, toothpicks, construction paper, and markers. Explain to your students that they can use any of the materials to craft their masterpieces. Every creation will look different, which is the beauty of this activity!

For a literacy tie-in, I like to pair this with the book Snow by Uri Shulevitz or another winter-themed story. Once done, encourage your students to write a descriptive story about their snowflake or snowman. It can focus on the materials they used and the design process. For added fun, have your students measure their snowflakes’ width and height or check if their design is symmetrical.

This activity is perfect as a center or whole-class challenge. When using this as a center, laminate the reusable activity sheets provided in the packet and let your students use dry-erase markers to respond. For a whole-class activity, display the task cards digitally using the included Google Slides. Set aside about 25 minutes for building, and encourage your students to share their creations with the group afterward. You can wrap up the activity by awarding each student a creativity certificate. It’s a fun way to celebrate their hard work and add a positive touch to your classroom.

2. Groundhog Burrows

Groundhog Day is a fun opportunity to blend seasonal learning with meaningful STEM. The Groundhog Burrows STEM activity challenges your students to design a safe groundhog burrow as the animal prepares to hibernate.

The Groundhog Burrows STEM activity challenges your students to design a safe groundhog burrow as the animal prepares to hibernate.

Before building, I introduce the activity by watching a short video about groundhogs and discussing why they need burrows, how they hibernate, and the legend behind Groundhog Day. This background knowledge will help my students understand the purpose behind their designs and give the challenge some real-world context.

The catch to this challenge is that the burrow your students create must include more than one entrance and exit, a place to hibernate, and a space to store food. What I love most about this challenge is that our student creations are meant to look different. This naturally encourages creativity and problem-solving rather than one “right” answer. After the challenge, I have my students reflect on their designs and share their thinking.

This STEM challenge is flexible and can be used as a lesson with your whole class, a center, or a digital assignment. I’ve included multiple task card sizes, differentiated student response sheets, and a digital Google Slides version you can display to the class or share individually with your students.

3. Two Football STEM Challenges

Your students will design and build a goalpost and a launcher to kick mini-footballs.

Infuse some Super Bowl excitement into your February STEM lineup with these engaging football-themed challenge! Your students will design and build a goalpost and a launcher to kick mini-footballs.

I start this challenge by reading Charlie Brown: Snoopy’s All-Star Football aloud. I encourage my students to test their designs, recording how many goals they make and revising their approach to improve accuracy. This activity uses creativity, problem-solving, and engineering skills to keep them active and engaged while they explore math and physics concepts.

Once they are done scoring points with the field goal challenge, they are ready to reward the winner with a trophy. But this isn’t just any trophy – it is one your students design and create in the Design a Trophy STEM Challenge. It’s a fun activity that you can do with materials you already have on hand.

4. Building Valentine Hearts

I start this February STEM challenge with a Valentine’s theme by creating unique hearts using 2D shapes. To get my students excited, I display a task card that outlines the challenge and show them a tinker tray filled with colorful shapes like triangles, circles, and squares. We talk about how shapes are part of everyday objects and how they can use their imagination to craft something meaningful.

This February STEM challenge allows students to create unique hearts using 2D shapes.

The challenge is simple, yet engaging. They need to use the shapes from the tray to design and build their Valentine hearts. I encourage them to think about patterns, symmetry, and creative combinations. This hands-on activity blends math, geometry, and art, which makes it a perfect way to tie STEM into a fun seasonal theme.

To add another layer of learning, I have my students write about their designs. They can describe the types and number of shapes they used or even add a special Valentine’s Day message. Combining creativity, math, and literacy, Valentine STEM activities bring a well-rounded, engaging experience to the classroom.

5. Candy Box Design Challenge

To set the stage for this fun Valentine’s Day STEM activity, I introduce the challenge by reading Love Monster and the Last Chocolate by Rachel Bright. This read-aloud gets your students excited and gives context for designing their own candy box. I then show examples of chocolate boxes, pointing out details like the variety of shapes, layers, and compartments. This discussion helps your students start thinking about the elements their box might include and how they’ll need to plan their designs.

The build a chocolate box STEM challenge helps students practice fine motor skills while completing simple STEM activities for Valentine's Day

Your students will then aim to design and build a sturdy candy box that can hold at least ten pieces of chocolate. Using materials like scrap paper, tape, and scissors, they must create a box that’s both functional and visually appealing. To add a hands-on learning element, I provide ten plastic cubes to represent chocolates so they can test and refine their designs. This activity taps into creativity and problem-solving and ties in engineering and math concepts as they measure, adjust, and perfect their candy boxes. Even better, this resource is offered digitally as well.

BONUS Valentine’s Day STEM Activity!

You can’t ever go wrong with a zip line challenge! This Valentine’s Day Zip Line Challenge will get your students thinking about how they can design and build a carrier to move Cupid and some Valentine hearts from one place to another.

6. Patriotic Typing and Bingo

Not every February STEM activity has to involve building and crafting, which is why I like to mix in a digital option that still feels purposeful and engaging. My Patriotic Activities resource includes both typing practice slides and a patriotic-themed digital Bingo game that are perfect for celebrating Presidents’ Day. Both of these activities are easy ways to bring technology into the classroom without adding extra prep.

My Patriotic Activities resource includes both typing practice slides and a patriotic-themed digital Bingo game.

The typing portion of this resource includes interactive Google Slides that let your students practice typing words and sentences. Each of your students will receive their own copy to type on, and the included directions will help them get started quickly and independently. It’s a simple and effective way to practice keyboarding skills while keeping your students engaged in a patriotic theme.

The digital Bingo game adds a fun layer to your students’ learning. As they play, your students will move Bingo chips directly on their boards using drag-and-drop skills. You have control of the spinner and call out each space. Everything is ready to go in Google Slides, which makes this a low-prep option that keeps your students actively involved and excited to play.

7. Read Across America Silly STEM Challenges

Since Read Across America Week is the week that March 2nd falls in, sometimes it starts at the end of February. That’s why I have included it in this post so that you can be ready when it does.

To begin this Read Across America activity, I introduce the challenge by connecting it to the wide array of books we’ll be reading. I explain that the goal is to complete a series of eight unique STEM challenges that combine problem-solving, creativity, and teamwork. Each challenge is tied to rhyming words or themes inspired by some of our favorite Read Across America books.

The Cat's Hat tower challenge allows students to build the tallest tower with cups and index cards.

The challenges range from building the tallest “Cat’s Hat” tower with cups and index cards to designing imaginative “places” using blocks. Each activity is hands-on and encourages your students to explore, test, and improve their ideas while incorporating rhymes and themes from the books we read.

The variety of activities ensures every one of your students finds something exciting to tackle. By the end, your students will have worked through engaging tasks that celebrate literacy and STEM creatively and collaboratively.
