St. Patrick’s Day STEM Activity: Materials You’ll Need

For this project, I kept things simple and used everyday items. Below is a list of materials that I recommend gathering before you start:

This free St. Patrick's Day STEM activity is perfect for a low-prep classroom activity or a fun day at home, just gather the materials to start.
  • Cardboard – Your students can cut the cardboard into small pieces to build their trap’s structure.
  • Straws & Popsicle Sticks – These are great for adding support and creative details.
  • Tinfoil – Tinfoil is perfect for giving your trap a bit of that magical shimmer leprechauns are known for loving.
  • Index Cards (both large and small) – My students usually find these useful for creating trap components or decorating.
  • String & Masking Tape – Both of these are essential for holding everything together (cutting in strips works best!).
  • Construction Paper – My students love using construction paper to add fun colors and extra design elements.
  • Printed Leprechauns on Cardstock – I love laminating these for durability. They can be used as a fun, interactive part of the challenge. My students seem to always get a kick out of placing their leprechaun around their trap at the end.
  • Stickers & Certificates – These are optional, but they’re a great way to celebrate creativity after the challenge is complete!

I make sure the items I use are budget-friendly and easily accessible. By doing so, it makes this St. Patrick’s Day STEM activity perfect for a low-prep classroom project or a fun day at home!

How to Build Your Leprechaun Trap

Before getting started, gather all the materials you’ll need. Lay everything out so your students can see their options and pick the items that spark their creativity. Whether it’s cardboard, popsicle sticks, or shiny tinfoil, having a variety of materials available encourages your students to think outside the box. Having everything within reach makes the building process smoother and allows them to focus on designing instead of searching for supplies or disrupting other groups.

Brainstorming and Designing the Trap

Brainstorming and designing is a great way to get students excited about this free St. Patrick's day STEM activity.

Once everything is ready, it’s time to brainstorm and design. I always like to start by imagining how a sneaky leprechaun might be tricked into the trap. What would lure him in? Maybe a shiny gold coin, a tiny ladder leading to a trapdoor, or a cozy hiding spot that looks too tempting to resist. Encourage your students to sketch out their ideas before they start building. This helps them visualize their plan and consider different ways to make their trap as clever as possible.

Constructing the Perfect Leprechaun Trap

The next step is constructing the perfect leprechaun trap. Students will begin to bring their designs to life.

Now comes the fun part, which is constructing the trap! Using the materials, your students can start bringing their designs to life. There’s no single way to build a leprechaun trap, so creativity is key! Some might design a classic pitfall trap. Others might create a cage that drops down when the leprechaun steps inside. Let them experiment with different building techniques and test their ideas along the way.

Adding Decorations and Creative Details

When it is time to decorate the trap, students can make the trap visually exciting while expressing their creativity during this free St. Patrick's Day activity.

Once the structure is built, it’s time to decorate and add details. This is where your students can make their trap extra enticing with construction paper, stickers, or even laminated leprechaun cutouts. Maybe they want to create a rainbow path leading to the trap or add a sign that says “Free Gold!” to trick the leprechaun into stepping inside. The more engaging and detailed the trap, the better! Decorations not only make the trap visually exciting but also allow your students to express their creativity.

Testing and Explaining the Trap

Using the response sheet to draw and label designs is a great way for students to share their ideas for their leprechaun traps.

After all the building and decorating, it’s time to test and explain how the trap works. Have your students think through their design and describe what will happen when a leprechaun stumbles upon their creation. Does it have a clever mechanism for catching him? Will he get stuck or trapped inside? They can use a response sheet to draw and label their design, or they can simply share their ideas out loud with the class. This reflection helps reinforce problem-solving skills and encourages them to think critically about their design choices.

Celebrate the Creativity!

Giving students a certificate for creativity of trapping a leprechaun is a great way to end this free St. Patrick's Day activity.

No matter how the traps turn out, the excitement of the challenge is what makes this St. Patrick’s Day STEM activity so much fun. Each trap will be unique, and each of your students will get to bring their own creative vision to life! You can take it a step further by allowing them to present their traps, test them out, and even earn a fun certificate for their creativity. Whether or not a leprechaun actually gets caught, this activity will bring plenty of laughter and learning to your classroom!
